HPMicro HPM53M1: 480MHz RISC-V MCU for Robot Joint Servo Control
At the 5th Dishui Lake China RISC-V Industry Forum, HPMicro (Beijing Hipromicro Robot Semiconductor) unveiled the HPM53M1 — a purpose-built RISC-V MCU for robot joint CAN communication and motion control. With 480MHz RISC-V core, integrated 150V half-bridge drivers, 4x CAN-FD, and 2MSPS ADC, it is already in mass production since June 2026.
Overview
On August 13, 2026, at the 5th Dishui Lake China RISC-V Industry Forum in Shanghai, HPMicro product director Fei Zhendong presented the HPM53M1 — a high-performance RISC-V MCU designed specifically for robot joint servo control. The chip entered mass production in June 2026 and targets the "compute versus space" zero-sum game that robot joint designers face.
HPMicro (北京先楫机器人半导体科技有限公司 / Beijing Hipromicro Robot Semiconductor Technology) is a subsidiary focused on robot semiconductor solutions, building on parent company HPMicro's established RISC-V MCU portfolio.

Four Core Advantages
HPMicro positions the HPM53M1 around four pillars that directly address robot joint design pain points:
- High Compute: 480 MHz RISC-V with double-precision FPU and DSP extensions. The 288 KB SRAM includes dedicated instruction and data local memories (ILM/DLM) for deterministic real-time response — critical for closed-loop motor control.
- High Performance Analog: Dual 16-bit ADCs at 2 MSPS, dual 12-bit DACs at 1 MSPS, plus four 6 MHz rail-to-rail op-amps that can directly drive power MOSFETs. This reduces external component count and PCB area.
- High Integration: On-chip 150V three-phase half-bridge drivers with bootstrap power supply, eliminating the need for external gate driver ICs. The 9x9 mm QFN80 package fits into space-constrained robot joints.
- Specialized for Robotics: SEI and resolver decode peripherals, 4x CAN-FD for multi-joint communication, and a -40 to +105 degC temperature range. The chip is designed from the ground up for servo motor control, not a general-purpose MCU repurposed for motor drive.
Robot Joint Application Context
Modern humanoid robots demand joint servo controllers that fit inside the joint itself, leaving minimal PCB area. At the same time, control algorithms are evolving from simple PID to feedforward compensation, adaptive algorithms, and even AI model inference. Current loop bandwidth requirements are rising from hundreds of Hz to tens of kHz.
The HPM53M1's "compute + drive + communication" integration on a single 9x9 mm die directly addresses this. The 4x CAN-FD interfaces enable high-speed deterministic communication between joints and the central controller, while the integrated 150V drivers can handle the voltage spikes common in brushless DC motor commutation.
Development Environment
HPMicro provides a complete SDK for the HPM53M1 based on the HPMicro SDK framework, which includes:
- HAL and LL drivers for all peripherals
- FreeRTOS and RT-Thread BSP support
- motor control libraries (FOC, SVPWM)
- CANopen and EtherCAT protocol stacks
- GCC and LLVM toolchains with QingKe RISC-V support
