Ubuntu 26.10 Brings Official RISC-V Desktop Images: SpacemiT K3 Pico-ITX Moves to Supported Hardware

📅 2026-10-12 ⏱ 7 min read 🔗 Source: Ubuntu Discourse (Oct 9 2026), The Quantum Dispatch, Liliputing, Ubuntu hardware docs

On October 9, 2026, Canonical developer vhaudiquet announced on the Ubuntu Discourse that Ubuntu 26.10 “Stonking Stingray” will ship with official desktop images for RISC-V. The final release is scheduled for October 15, 2026, and the SpacemiT K3 Pico-ITX is one of the first boards promoted from community-supported to the Ubuntu-supported hardware list. This is the first time Ubuntu has offered a live desktop ISO for riscv64 — the same installer image that x86 and Arm users are accustomed to — rather than only server or preinstalled board images.

Honesty note. The facts below are drawn from Canonical’s announcement and one independent hands-on write-up (The Quantum Dispatch, Oct 10 2026). The daily images are explicitly labeled experimental. Canonical has not claimed graphics acceleration works, so treat real-hardware desktop performance as unmeasured until final release. The QEMU notes below are from the same announcement; the GNOME desktop is reported to take 30+ minutes to load under emulation.

What Changed

ItemDetail
ReleaseUbuntu 26.10 “Stonking Stingray”, due October 15, 2026
Architectureriscv64 desktop ISO with GNOME, matching x86/Arm installer experience
Supported boardSpacemiT K3 Pico-ITX added to Ubuntu-supported boards list
Host OS for QEMUUbuntu 25.10 or later recommended (for recent enough QEMU with RVA23 support)
Status todayExperimental daily images available; final images ship with 26.10 release
LTS supportUbuntu 26.04 LTS does not receive K3 support; this arrives with 26.10 only

The significance is practical, not symbolic. A new architecture only becomes useful when everyday software shows up for it. An official desktop ISO gives RISC-V boards the same on-ramp that made Arm SBCs approachable: one familiar installer, a standard package archive, and a familiar GNOME desktop.

The K3 Pico-ITX was previously documented only in Ubuntu’s community-supported section. With 26.10 it moves to the supported-boards page because Canonical’s kernel team cherry-picked a series of K3 display patches so a graphical desktop works at all.

Installing on the K3 Pico-ITX

Canonical’s announcement points to two routes. The hardware route uses the stonking-desktop-riscv64 daily ISO from Ubuntu’s cdimage server and the K3 install guide in the Ubuntu hardware docs.

  1. Download the daily stonking-desktop-riscv64 ISO from cdimage.ubuntu.com.
  2. Put the K3 Pico-ITX into fastboot mode (hold the FDL button while powering the first USB-C port).
  3. Flash the board partitions according to the Ubuntu K3 hardware guide.
  4. Boot from the installed image and complete the GNOME first-run setup.

SpacemiT’s own Bianbu distribution is still the better choice if you need the vendor BSP features that mainline has not yet picked up: full UFS stability, all 16 cores enumerated, A100/NPU tooling, and power/thermal management. Use Ubuntu 26.10 when you want an upstream-aligned desktop environment.

Running Without Hardware: QEMU Emulation

If you do not have a RISC-V board, you can still test the desktop using the Xubuntu Minimal riscv64 image under QEMU. Canonical explicitly recommends this lighter XFCE-based image for virtual machines because the full GNOME desktop can take more than 30 minutes to load under emulation.

# Host must run Ubuntu 25.10 or later for recent QEMU RVA23 support
qemu-system-riscv64 \
  -machine virt \
  -cpu rv64 \
  -m 4G \
  -smp 4 \
  -bios /usr/share/qemu/opensbi-riscv64-generic-fw_dynamic.bin \
  -kernel /path/to/vmlinuz \
  -append "root=/dev/vda1 rw console=ttyS0" \
  -drive file=xubuntu-minimal-riscv64.img,format=raw,if=virtio \
  -netdev user,id=net0 -device virtio-net-device,netdev=net0 \
  -device virtio-gpu-pci \
  -display sdl,gl=off

The exact QEMU command is provided in the Ubuntu hardware docs. Emulating the RVA23 profile requires a QEMU new enough to expose the extensions the K3 kernel expects.

What Is Still Experimental

Engineering Notes

Two technical details in the announcement are worth noting for builders:

  1. Flutter on riscv64. The Ubuntu installer UI is built with Flutter, so Canonical needed a riscv64 build of Flutter 3.44.0. The company says it pushed RISC-V support upstream, where it remains under review.
  2. K3 display patches. The kernel team cherry-picked a set of patches specifically for SpacemiT K3 display support. Without them, a graphical desktop would not work on the board.

Builder Takeaways

  1. First-class desktop support is arriving. Ubuntu 26.10 is the first release to treat RISC-V as a peer desktop architecture rather than a server-only or board-specific port.
  2. K3 Pico-ITX is now a validated target. The board moves from community-supported to Ubuntu-supported, which matters for procurement and long-term maintenance.
  3. Use Bianbu for vendor features, Ubuntu for upstream alignment. Mainline still lacks UFS, A100 enumeration, and power management on K3; plan your stack accordingly.
  4. QEMU is viable for evaluation. The Xubuntu Minimal image lets developers test the RISC-V desktop without hardware, provided the host runs a recent QEMU.

下文信息来自 Canonical 官方公告与一篇独立 hands-on(The Quantum Dispatch,2026-10-10)。
